Replicate The Hands

The 'rippled' design on the premium version more closely mimics the pressure points of the hand.

This provides two main benefits: each portion of the clay simply and easily comes to the center at once - relieving pressure and joint pain often experienced in the normal manual process.

How It Works

best pottr tool for artist

A Firm Consistent Force

The Centering Aid replicates the functions of your hands but more precisely. Unlike the natural movement and flexibility of the hands, which can create unwanted play and cause the clay to wobble off-center, the tool provides a firm, consistent force. By eliminating the subtle shifts and movement from muscles, joints, and the soft pads of your hands, it steadily forms the clay to the profile of the tool face, ensuring that it stays perfectly centered on the wheel. This makes the process a lot quicker and more reliable, helping potters of all skill levels achieve perfect results with ease.

The Pott'r Promise

Our promise is simple - If it doesn't do what it says on the tin, you can have a full no quibble refund and you won't even need to send it back!

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does the centering aid work?

Our centering aid makes it easy to quickly and effortlessly center clay on the wheel. It applies firm, steady pressure to reduce wobble caused by the natural movement of your hands, ensuring you achieve a perfectly centered lump every time.

Version 2 introduces two key features: an easier hand-holding experience with the looped two-hand grip, and the innovative ripple design. The looped grip allows you to hold the tool with both hands, providing added stability and control. The ripple design mimics the pressure points of your hands, replicating the manual technique of centering clay. As you move the tool upward, the ripples function like the bony pressure points of your hands, centering portions of the clay individually to form a concentric outer surface. Once the clay is centered, simply rotate the tool to use its smooth edge, creating a perfectly even finish.

2. Is the centering aid suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! This tool is designed for both beginners and experienced potters. For beginners, it makes centering easier to master, while professionals will appreciate the consistency it brings to their workflow.

3. Can this tool help people with limited hand strength or mobility?

Yes, the centering aid is ideal for potters who experience difficulty with hand strength, joint pain or mobility. It reduces the physical strain of centering and allows for better control without the need for constant hand pressure.

4. What sizes of clay can it handle?

Our centering aid is available in two sizes to accommodate different clay weights. The smaller tool is perfect for lumps up to 1.5kg, while the larger tool is recommended for clay over 1.5kg. Both sizes are versatile and can adapt to most common clay weights used in wheel-throwing. For exceptionally large lumps, typically over 4kg, a custom-made tool can be created, although this size is less commonly needed in most pottery work.

5. Does it replace traditional hand-centering techniques?

For some potters, it can. The centering aid complements traditional methods by offering greater speed, precision, and control, particularly for those who find hand-centering challenging. Think of it as an additional tool that makes centering faster and easier. And for those who prefer mastering the traditional way, the centering aid helps you quickly grasp the core principles of hand-centering, making the learning process smoother.

6. Can it be used on any type of pottery wheel?

Yes, the centering aid is compatible with all standard pottery wheels. It's easy to use and fits seamlessly into your current setup.

7. Is it easy to clean and maintain?

Yes, the centering aid is made from durable materials that are easy to clean. Simply rinse it after use, and it’s ready for the next session.

8. Will using the centering aid affect the quality of my finished piece?

Not at all! The centering aid helps you start with a perfectly centered base, improving your control throughout the entire throwing process and resulting in a higher-quality finished piece.

9. Do I need any special skills to use it?

No special skills are required. The centering aid is straightforward to use and can be mastered in just a couple of tries, making it accessible for all potters.

10. Why are there different versions available?

We offer different versions of the centering aid to meet a variety of user needs and preferences. The standard version is more affordable and adequately performs the centering task. In contrast, the premium version provides a more 'deluxe' experience, featuring enhanced hand-holding and a quicker ability to center the clay thanks to its pressure point replication design. This allows potters to choose the tool that best fits their style and requirements.

11. What colours are available?

The centering aid is available in light brown, black, and white upon request. Otherwise, the colour will be a delightful surprise, as it will depend on the production run at the time. Essentially, you’ll receive a colour that is currently available in production.
